Portfolio
Thank you for visiting my projects page, below are some examples of my more recent projects and the stories behind them.
Earth Day 2020
Earth Day 2020-inspired pop-up exhibition. My responsibilities included the design, printing, copy-editing and diorama construction of this exhibition under the supervision of the Iziko Exhibition and Design team (Amy Sephton and Nkosingiphile Mazibuko). The exhibition was installed with the help of the Karoo and Invertebrate Palaeontology interns of 2020. Features Mbali a Mazibuko original illustration.
Sentinals of the South
Sentinals of the South, a beautiful tactile exhibition space by the Iziko Exhibition Team. As a volunteer, I helped draft the space and assisted in the narrative development, science writing and copy-editing.
Mbali's Earth Day Adventures
A webcomic adaptation of the Earth Day 2020 pop-up exhibition, created in conjunction with the Iziko Exhibition and Design team. My responsibilities included social media content creation, graphic design, diorama digitization and digital illustration as featured above. This has since been presented at the SAMA 2020 meeting and the Goethe-Institut Namibia – Digitalization of Culture 2021 meeting.
PalaeoShwe
Fabric Designs are drawing on traditional ShweShwe and Ankara fabric motifs, but with fun and educational palaeontology illustrations. Designed in conjunction with Puppet Planet for shows and merchandise.
Academia Illustrations
An assortment of illustrations for textbooks, peer-review publications and popular articles commissioned for various clients at Stellenbosch University.
Worksheet Design
A current collaboration with Iziko education to create a series of palaeontology worksheets. These are designed to help students both explore science topics in the current curriculum and the amazing science on display in the museum.
Poster Design
A trilingual poster to be used as part of a community and visitor feedback session hosted by Iziko museums. The poster had to be welcoming and clearly explain the importance of visitor feedback.
Paleoart
This is an Endothiodon based on fossil finds in the Karoo Basin. A passion project is exploring the Mark Witton approach to paleoart. This reconstruction was a digital painting done in Procreate, with some photo bashing and texture work done in Affinity Photo.
Natural Illustration
This is part of my digital watercolour series. Although done in Procreate, this series attempts to remain faithful to the physical restrictions of traditional watercolour to achieve that same transparent, layered, and liquid quality of the medium.
Puppet Planet
This was the Heritage Day In_herit Festival and my responsibilities included broadcasting and filming the live stream event on Facebook.
This project is part of an ongoing collaboration between myself and Puppet Planet; a non-profit company led by Dr Wendy Taylor. My roles in projects ranging from social media management to product development and science writing.
Geodyssey
Never take the rocks beneath your feet for granted again. Geodyssey allows you to see the geological history of the Western Cape, wherever your feet may take you. Sciism was responsible for creating the brand and visual assets for the app, such as the loading screen, buttons and icons.
